Louis Sullivan’s Carson Pririe Scott store in Chicago (1904)

Chicago

Sullivan’s store displays a dramatic new design for the big city department store. A unified facade composed of horizontals and anchored by a vertical tower. The upward thrust of the building is contained by a deep cornice supported by exposed columns over recessed top floor. The cornice throws the top floor in deep shadow, firmly denoting the strong, sheltering roof.
